Domestic Violence

A Domestic Violence allegation or conviction can land you in jail, prevent you from visiting your children, take away your right to own a firearm, prevent you from staying in your own home, and forever tarnish your record. This can all happen even if your significant other wants to drop all charges against you!

In fact, a person reporting Domestic Violence may have little power once the police are called. In Clark County, Washington, Domestic Violence is prosecuted very aggressively. The Clark County Domestic Violence Prosecution Center (DVPC) is a joint effort between the City of Vancouver, and the Clark County Prosecutors Office.  The DVPC receives special funding to secure Domestic Violence convictions and hold defendants accountable with jail time, counseling, and orders that can prohibit contact between your family members or significant other.

When you are facing serious penalties and government resources trying to convict you it is imperative to have an attorney with the skill and experience to prepare a zealous defense.  At the Harlan Law firm, we have defended hundreds of Domestic Violence cases successfully and we can anticipate the prosecutor’s next move. Why? Because we have previously worked as attorneys prosecuting Domestic Violence cases in Clark County!

A Domestic Violence conviction can lead to a No Contact Order preventing you from going to your own home, see a family member, child, and it may put your job in jeopardy. In Washington, Domestic Violence misdemeanors are punishable by up to $1000 in fines and 90 days in jail. A gross misdemeanor is punishable by up to $5,000 in fines and a year in jail.

There are also added penalties not found in most criminal cases, including one year of required domestic violence perpetrator treatment. This is a statutorily approved program that consists of 32 sessions over 26 weeks, including six monthly follow-ups. This is a huge time commitment and can end up costing you thousands of dollars.

The Harlan Law firm has had a great deal of success defending persons accused of Domestic Violence offenses including members of the military and police officers.
